$44.99

Full-grain leather collar with solid brass hardware. The one piece of gear that looks better in year five than it did in the box.

Most dog gear is at its best on day one and goes downhill from there. Full-grain leather works the other way. This collar starts handsome and stiff-backed, then breaks in to your dog's exact neck, picks up a burnish where the buckle rides, and darkens into a color no factory can ship. Dog people who've owned one know: a good leather collar isn't an accessory, it's a record of the dog wearing it.

The materials are the whole story, so here they are plainly. Full-grain vegetable-tanned leather, the top cut of the hide, not split, not corrected, about 3.5 mm thick, with hand-burnished edges so there's no raw cut against the fur. The buckle and D-ring are solid cast brass, not plated, so the hardware ages right alongside the leather instead of flaking away from it. Classic pin buckle with brass-set holes; it goes on like a belt and stays exactly where you set it.

Two honest notes before you buy. First, leather and daily swimming are a bad marriage, for the dog who's in the water every week, the Quick-Dry Sport Collar is the right tool, and this one is for dry land and good company. Second, leather asks for about five minutes of care a year: a wipe-down and a little conditioner when it starts looking thirsty. That's the entire maintenance schedule for a collar that can outlast every other piece of gear you own. Measure the neck, use the two-finger rule, and if your dog is between sizes, go up.
